Understanding the Upholstery Cleaning Process

One of the most overlooked areas in the home when it comes to cleaning is probably going to be the upholstery. Our upholstery, however, is something in the home that we use every day, so it is important to maintain regular cleanings to ensure a healthy and hygienic home.

What Is Upholstery Cleaning?

Upholstery is the fabric and the padding that covers the furniture in our home. This includes our couches, love seats, armchairs, ottomans, and anything else that may be covered in fabric. The process in which we clean this fabric is known as upholstery cleaning.

The process involved with cleaning upholstery in the home isn't as easy as you may think, however. Many times, you will find that the fabric that needs to be cleaned is a delicate or natural material like cotton. You also can't usually just remove the fabric from the furniture to clean it either. You will have to clean it while it remains attached to the furniture. So, no. It isn't as simple as removing the fabric and throwing it in the washing machine.

In addition to the type of material, it is also important that you take note of any other damage, including tears. Once this is done, the furniture then needs to be vacuumed thoroughly, conditioned, rinsed, and then vacuum dried. Another process often used to clean upholstery is steam cleaning. This process involves hot-water extraction.

Upholstery cleaning often requires the skill, know-how, and specialized equipment of professionals to get the job done right without causing any damage to the furniture.

Benefits of Upholstery Cleaning

Just as you would clean your carpets regularly, it is also a good idea to stay on top of regular upholstery cleaning as well because of its many benefits including improved air quality and the effective removal of allergens, dust, and so much more that threatens the quality of the air in the home.

How Often Should It Be Done?

Upholstery cleaning depends on a few factors to determine how often it should be done. If you have pets and kids or you work outside often and bring in dirt, then the upholstery should be cleaned at least two times per year.

If you are unsure if you need another cleaning, you can take a white cloth that has been moistened with a small bit of water. Rub it along the furniture's fabric, and if you see any dirt coming off onto the towel, then it may be time for a cleaning to be done.

Upholstery Cleaning Services

It is always best to leave upholstery cleaning to the professionals because they have access to specialized equipment that helps make the job easier. They also have the experience that is needed working with this equipment, so you are ensured of the best clean possible.

So, before you head over to the store to rent a steam cleaner or other machine to clean the upholstery yourself, consider the advantages of hiring a professional to do it for you.
